Fad Diets- Part #1

It is estimated that Americans spend more than 33 billion dollars per year on weight loss products. Unfortunately, the majority of these weight loss techniques and fad diets are ineffective and sometimes dangerous.

Some "red flags" that may indicate a diet or weight loss program is ineffective or unsafe include:

* Guaranteed quick , easy weight loss for everyone
* Promoting "spot reduction" ( the only spot reduction is lipo suction!!!)
* Focusing on one specific food or nutrient (cutting out whole food groups from the food guide pyramid)
* Promoting weight loss without the use of exercise
* Using spectacular advertising claims and testimonials
* Promoting the use of supplements and /or weight loss pills

  1. Angela, how do you feel about supplements used with diet and exercise?

  2. Be wary of diets that promote supplements as an integral part of the weight loss process. Those programs may have more to sale you than a safe and effective weight loss program.

The only "supplements" I would suggest are:

*Whey Protein - great as a meal replacement if you don't have time to make a meal ( whey is taken in after a workout), however "real" food is always best (egg whites, chicken, turkey breast, cottage cheese, greek yogurt).

*Casein Protein - taken at the end of the day "if" you are trying to build muscle and working out 5-6 days per week. Casein is a great muscle repair protein (cottage cheese has natural casein protein).

*a good multi-vitamin- it is very hard to get the nutrients we need with the normal American diet ( never enough fruits and vegetables).

    * fish or flaxseed oil - help joints, skin, hair, and heart
